Advantages of the Sidemount Configuration

There are many reasons why we choose to dive predominantly in sidemount. To make things clearer, we list the advantages of the sidemount configuration compared to a single cylinder as well as to doubles with a manifold. At the same time, there are no perfect configurations — only ones that are suitable for the type of dive you are about to do. That is why we also have a page dedicated to the disadvantages of the sidemount configuration.

Sidemount vs. Backmount (single cylinder)
#

AspectSidemountBackmount (1 cylinder)
Gas source redundancyFull gas redundancy (two independent sources)A single gas source
Equipment redundancyFull regulator redundancy (two first stages and two second stages)Two second stages but only one first stage
MobilityIncreased freedom of movement, clear backSolid backplate on the back, slightly reduced mobility
Pressure on the backWeight distributed laterally – less pressure on the spineWeight concentrated on back and shoulders
Flexibility when gearing upCylinders can be attached/detached in the waterMust be fully geared up at the surface
Valve accessibilityValves are visible and easy to reachValves are behind you, harder to check underwater
Hydrodynamic profileFlatter profile, ideal for confined spacesTaller profile, less efficient in narrow environments
Risk of entanglementFlat profile with valves tucked under the armpits reduces chances of entanglementExposed valve can snag on fishing lines, cables, or algae
Risk of impact to valves or regulatorsBoth valves and regulators are protectedValve and first stage are exposed and easier to hit or damage

Sidemount vs. Backmount (double cylinders)
#

AspectSidemountBackmount (doubles)
SafetyCompletely independent sources, full redundancyConnected sources – a failure can affect both until manually isolated
Valve accessVery easy, within the field of viewMore difficult – requires mobility and practice
Transport and logisticsCylinders are carried separately – easier on landThe system is heavy and bulky
ComfortBalanced weight distributionHeavy load on the back, more tiring
Underwater profileVery hydrodynamic, ideal for caves and wrecksTall profile, less suitable for tight spaces
ConfigurabilityHighly customizable to the diverStandard configuration, few adjustments (which can also be an advantage)
Mounting/DismountingEasy to attach and remove in the waterRequires full gearing up at the surface
Cylinder availabilityFeasible with 2 standard aluminum cylinders available worldwideRelatively few recreational centers have doubles for rent
